Marin’s older towns were built as summer retreats for San Francisco families, and San Rafael’s Gerstle Park and Dominican, Mill Valley’s Blithedale and Cascade canyons, Sausalito’s Old Town, Belvedere Island, Ross and San Anselmo hold 1880s–1930s Victorians, brown-shingle cottages and Craftsman bungalows with bathrooms that cannot be recreated today: clawfoot and built-in cast-iron tubs, pedestal and wall-hung porcelain sinks, hexagonal floor tile and subway wall tile.
