Refinishing is safe when it is done properly
Bathtub refinishing — also called reglazing or resurfacing — is safe when it is done by trained professionals with the right equipment and ventilation. The coating has a strong odor while it is sprayed, which is why the crew ventilates, wears respirators and works with no one else in the home. The odor usually dissipates within a few hours and at worst lingers up to 24 hours, and once the finish has cured it is completely inert.
Behind each part of that answer is a practical rule: what the fumes are, what the crew does about them, what you should do, and when the tub is ready. Everything below is the guidance we give every customer, drawn from our area preparation guide and terms of service. What the fumes are and how long they last
The finish we spray is a solvent-based, commercial-grade coating. As it goes on and begins to cure it releases vapor, the strong odor people notice, and that is why refinishing is done with the home empty. Our terms of service put it plainly: the chemicals can be harmful while being sprayed and with prolonged exposure, so we recommend avoiding the immediate vicinity during spraying and limiting exposure for at least 24 hours after completion. In most cases the odor dissipates within a few hours; in the worst case it may linger for up to 24 hours. Once the coating has cured it is hard, inert and safe for everyday use, with no ongoing odor.

What the crew does, and what you should do
On our side
Ventilation is part of the job, not an extra. Walls, cabinets and fixtures are masked before spraying, ventilation runs during and after application, and the technicians wear appropriate respirators the whole time the coating is in the air. Because the work is sprayed and ventilated inside one bathroom, the rest of the home or building carries on as normal.
On yours
- Be out for the full appointment. For safety and air-quality reasons, no one other than Simply Reglaze technicians may be in the home, condo or apartment while refinishing is in progress; we cannot make exceptions.
- Let it air out before you return. Allow at least 5 hours of ventilation before re-entering. Anyone with asthma, allergies or other respiratory or medical sensitivities should stay out for 24 hours or more.
- Keep ventilating, but leave the bathroom as the crew left it. Our aftercare instructions ask you not to open windows in the room, touch the tub or switch on fans over it during the cure, because moving air drops dust into the wet coating.
- Plan the bathroom you will use. The refinished fixture is off limits for 48 hours; arrange a second bathroom or a neighbor’s shower ahead of time.
Before the crew arrives
- Everything out of the tub, shower and counters
- Pets out of the home for the entire appointment
- Dripping faucets fixed; the surface must stay dry 48 hours
- Furniture and wall hangings moved 8–10 feet back
Who should stay away, and for how long
Pets
Pets must be out of the home for the entire appointment, for their safety and ours. This is a condition of the job: if animals are on the premises when the crew arrives, the work cannot proceed and a cancellation fee applies. Keep them away from the bathroom until the finish has cured; on a refinished tile floor, that means everyone off it for 24 to 48 hours.
Children
Children leave with the rest of the household and come back after the ventilation window. Once home, keep them out of the bathroom, or at least away from the tub, until the 48-hour cure is over: a hand on a wet coating leaves a mark. After that, the surface is inert and the bathroom is theirs again.
Pregnancy and health sensitivities
Plainly: leave the home during application and stay out for the ventilation window. Our published guidance is that anyone with asthma, allergies or other respiratory or medical sensitivities stays out for 24 hours or more, and if you are pregnant the sensible course is to treat yourself as part of that group. When the tub is safe to use
Most fixtures are described as ready about 24 hours after coating, but our aftercare instructions and terms ask for the full 48 hours with nothing on the fixture, especially water, before it is used. That is the rule that protects both the finish and your warranty. Water reaching the surface during that window can ruin the coating, which is why we ask you to fix dripping faucets before the appointment and leave the showerhead bags in place until the cure is over.
After 48 hours the coating is cured and inert. Remove any leftover tape and paper, replace the drain cover and stopper, and re-caulk only if necessary; hardware and shower doors go back on 48 hours after the reglaze. How the rest of the bathroom is protected
Safety is also about the walls, floors and fixtures around the tub, and the few things our terms ask you to know in advance.

Masking and protection
Walls, cabinets and fixtures are masked with quality painter’s tape before spraying. Tape can occasionally lift old or flaking paint; touch-ups are the owner’s responsibility, so tell the crew about fragile paint.

No demolition, no plumbing
The tub stays in place and the plumbing is untouched. We are a licensed refinishing contractor, not a licensed plumber: if hardware must come off, a plumber does it, and it goes back on 48 hours after the reglaze.

A sound surface to work on
The fixture must be structurally sound with proper drainage. A flexing fiberglass floor gets an inlay repair before refinishing.
Safer underfoot, too
A glossy tub floor can be slippery. Our slip-resistant treatment mixes a fine texture into the final coat on the standing area, a better answer than a suction-cup mat, which traps water, damages the finish and is excluded from the warranty.
Where the real safety difference is
The coatings in hardware-store refinishing kits are two-part solvent-based products, and the kit puts them in your hands in a small, poorly ventilated room with none of the equipment; the instructions assume ventilation and respiratory protection you supply yourself.
If you do use a kit, treat the safety section of the instructions as a shopping list: a respirator with organic-vapor cartridges, gloves and eye protection, continuous ventilation with a fan exhausting out a window, pilot lights off, and children and pets out of the house through the multi-day cure. Professionals bring that equipment as routine and are gone the same day.
