During refinishing — also called reglazing or resurfacing — we add a fine texture to the topcoat on the floor of the tub or shower pan, so the surface you stand on grips when wet and soapy. What is a slip-resistant treatment?
A slip-resistant treatment — also sold as a non-slip or anti-slip finish — is a fine textured additive mixed into the final coat of a refinished bathtub or shower floor. It goes on the standing area only, in a masked rectangle that stops short of the drain and the sides. Cured, it feels like fine sandpaper to a wet foot and almost nothing to a dry one, in the same color as the tub.
It is applied during bathtub refinishing or shower pan refinishing, never on its own over an old surface, because a textured coat only grips if what is under it is bonded. It suits any tub floor we refinish — porcelain, cast iron, fiberglass, acrylic — and fiberglass, acrylic and tiled shower floors.

Tub floors, shower pans and tile floors
Texture goes where you stand; everything else stays high-gloss.
Bathtub floors
The most common request. Texture goes on the flat standing area, stopping short of the drain and the curve up the sides. The rest of the tub keeps the high-gloss finish.
Shower pans
Most fiberglass pans have a molded texture that wears grey and holds grime. We level it during shower pan refinishing and build a fine, cleanable texture back into the new coat — grip without the dirt trap.
Tile shower floors
Mosaic floors get their grip from grout lines, which vanish under a refinished surface. Texture in the floor coat gives it back. See tile floor refinishing.
Walk-in and step-over tubs
A refinished walk-in tub can have the texture on its floor and, if you ask, on the seat. We do not cut down or convert tubs.
Why mats and stickers fail on a refinished surface
Each of these is a common cause of damage to a refinished tub, and each is excluded from our warranty. Built-in texture removes the need for them.
Suction-cup mats
The cups pull on the finish every time the mat is lifted and eventually take flakes with them. Water trapped underneath softens the coating and grows mildew. Suction-cup mats are the most common warranty claim we have to decline.
Adhesive strips and appliqués
Anti-slip stickers bond to the topcoat. When they lift, or you scrape off the grey ring around them, they take the finish with them.
Rubber mats left in place
Fine if hung up after every bath. Left in the tub, a mat holds standing water against the finish, the one thing a cured coating cannot tolerate.
Exclusions are in our limited warranty. Cleaning a textured floor: non-abrasive liquid cleaner, soft brush, rinse after each bath; no scouring powders, bleach or scrub pads. A tub damaged by a mat is usually fixable — see bathtub repair and fiberglass tub repair.
How much does a slip-resistant treatment cost?
The texture is an optional add-on, applied to the floor only and quoted on inspection. The base is the refinish: most standard bathtubs refinish for $350–$500, and most shower pans for $400–$900.
