Laminate countertop refinishing — also called reglazing or resurfacing — restores the surface of your existing counters instead of replacing them. Chips, seams and worn edges are filled and sanded, the laminate is deglossed so the coating bonds, and a durable stone-look or solid-color finish is sprayed on in a single day.
Plastic laminate — Formica, Wilsonart and similar brands — is a thin sheet of resin-impregnated paper glued to a particleboard core, the counter of choice from the 1950s through the 1990s. That is why so many California kitchens still have it, and why it dates a room so quickly: the pattern, the dark seam lines and the rolled front edge announce the decade the kitchen was last touched. Refinishing
One day, no tear-out, and the sink, faucet and backsplash stay put. Choose a solid color or a multi-tone stone-look finish that reads as granite from across the room; samples are shown before we spray. Replacement
New counters mean tear-out, a plumber to disconnect and reset the sink, a template visit, a fabrication wait and days without a kitchen — $2,500–$6,000+ before anything goes wrong. It is the right call when the particleboard core is swollen or rotten, or the layout is changing anyway.
Painting it yourself

Seams, edges, heat and cutting
Seams, the joint where a post-formed counter meets its backsplash, and worn or lifting edges are filled, sanded and coated over; a lifting edge is glued down first. Particleboard swollen by water can be smoothed but not shrunk back. The finish resists everyday heat and normal stains, but it is not a trivet or a cutting board: a pan straight from the burner or a knife on the surface will mark it, and the warranty does not cover cuts or burns.
