Does a refinished kitchen sink hold up?
Yes — with the published cure time and sensible care. A kitchen sink is the hardest-working fixture in the house, so here is what to expect.
Chips, rust and stains
The drain flange and front rim take the abuse: a dropped pan chips the enamel, water gets under it and rust follows, and worn enamel soaks up coffee, tea and pot scuffs. We grind out rust, fill each chip, sand it flush and coat over it. Minor chips are included; heavy rust or an old DIY coating to strip is quoted first.
Daily kitchen use
No water for 24 hours, then go easy for a few days while the coating hardens. After that it takes dishes, produce and normal cooking traffic. The two enemies are heavy pots dropped into the basin — chips and nicks in a reglazed sink are not covered by warranty — and abrasive cleaners, which dull any refinished surface. What we don’t refinish
Stainless steel, composite, granite and quartz sinks. Refinishing coatings bond to glazed and enameled surfaces, not bare metal or resin-bound stone, and we say so before you book. Not sure? Bare brushed metal is stainless; a glossy basin with a chip showing dark metal underneath is enameled cast iron or porcelain on steel, and we refinish both.
Color change — or replace instead?
Almond, biscuit, harvest gold or avocado to white is part of the same reglaze; see color change refinishing.
