The Service

What is cultured marble refinishing?

Cultured marble refinishing — also called reglazing or resurfacing — restores the gel-coat surface of your existing vanity top, integrated sink, tub surround or shower walls instead of tearing them out. We repair chips and crazing, sand back the yellowed gel coat, and spray a solid-color or stone-look finish that leaves it smooth, glossy and bright.

Cultured marble is a cast blend of polyester resin and crushed marble dust under a thin, clear gel coat, molded in one piece — usually a vanity top with the sink built in. It filled bathrooms from the 1970s through the 1990s in swirled white, beige, pink and blue. The gel coat is what yellows, crazes and scorches; the cast body underneath is usually sound, which is why it refinishes so well. It appears on our countertop refinishing and sink refinishing pages too.

Our Process

5 Simple Steps to a Like-New Finish

Our proven process has been refined over 10 years to deliver consistent, stunning results every time.

*Repairing chips, cracks and other damage may carry an additional cost, quoted upfront before we begin.

01

Inspect & Clean

~30 min

We inspect the fixture and deep-clean the surface to remove soap scum, body oils and residue.

02

Acid Wash

~20 min

An acid wash strips and opens up the surface so the new coating can bond permanently.

03

Surface Refinishing

~90 min

The heart of the job, done in three stages. Repair: every chip, crack and worn spot is filled and repaired for a smooth, solid base. Sanding & surface prep: the entire surface is sanded and prepped so the new finish grips and lasts for years. Deep wash: a final deep wash removes every trace of dust and residue so nothing interferes with the coating.

04

Prime Coating

~30 min

A bonding primer is applied as the foundation for a durable, lasting finish.

05

Reglaze

~60 min

Multiple coats of commercial-grade coating are sprayed on for a smooth, glossy, like-new finish.

Common Problems

What goes wrong with cultured marble — and what we do about it

The gel coat is only a fraction of a millimeter thick. After thirty or forty years it fails in predictable ways.

Yellowing and etched bowls

Sunlight, heat and decades of cleaning chemicals oxidize the clear gel coat, turning white tops cream and then yellow; hard water and abrasive cleaners wear the bowl dull and rough. Neither scrubs out, because the damage is in the resin. We sand the oxidized layer back, repair the etching and re-coat, and the top is white again. See calcium stains in sinks.

Crazing, burns and scorches

Hairline cracks around the drain and faucet holes where hot water expands the resin; a brown ring or blister where a curling iron or candle sat. Both are in the gel coat, not the casting. We grind out burns, fill and seal crazing, and coat over it. Deep burns are quoted on inspection; very few are beyond repair.

Color change to white

The most requested cultured-marble job: a swirled beige, pink or blue top to solid, modern white. Any solid color can be matched, and vanity tops can take a stone-look finish instead. See color change refinishing.

Top and sink refinished together

Because top and bowl are one casting, they are refinished together in one spray — no seam, no color mismatch between counter and sink. On the same visit we can match a refinished tub, tile or a cultured-marble shower in the same white, so the whole bathroom finally agrees.

How much does cultured marble refinishing cost?

Most cultured-marble vanity tops cost between $350 and $800 — a fraction of a new top and sink. Here’s how it compares.

See our California refinishing cost guide →

A one-piece top with its integrated bowl is quoted as a single countertop job; a stand-alone cultured-marble sink bowl is priced as a sink, $250–$500. A single-sink top sits at the low end; a long double vanity with burns and crazing lands higher, and tub surrounds or shower walls are quoted by area. Send us a photo for an exact price, usually the same day.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Cultured marble is one of the best candidates for refinishing: the failing layer is a thin gel coat over a sound cast body. We repair, sand and re-coat it in a single visit.

Yes. Yellowing is oxidation in the gel coat, so no cleaner removes it. We sand the oxidized layer back and apply a new white finish.

Crazing — hairline surface cracks — is filled and sealed under the new coating. A crack that runs through the casting is repaired and coated where the top is otherwise sound; we tell you on inspection if it is not.

Yes. Curling-iron rings, candle scorches and cigarette burns are ground out, filled flush and coated over. Deep burns are quoted on inspection.

Absolutely — it is the most common request. Any solid color can be matched, and vanity tops can take a stone-look finish instead.

Yes. The integrated bowl and the top are one casting, so they are refinished together as one piece with no seam or color difference.

With proper care, 5–10 years. Countertops and bathroom and vanity sinks are backed by our written 2-year warranty against peeling and coating failure under normal use.

Yes. Surrounds, shower walls, shower pans and cultured-marble tubs are all refinished in place, usually on the same visit as the vanity so everything matches.
