What porcelain sink repair involves
Porcelain sink repair is the first stage of every sink we refinish, and the reason a patch-only fix rarely satisfies anyone. Porcelain is glass fused to clay or iron. Once it chips, the exposed body is porous, so a bare filler sits in a visible crater, a different white, that yellows and pops out with hot water. We fill and shape the chip, sand it flush, then coat the basin so the repair, the old glaze and any worn areas become one surface.
Our sink repair is therefore normally quoted as repair plus refinish, using the same process as porcelain sink refinishing and, on enameled cast iron, kitchen sink refinishing. Both are done in place with the plumbing connected.

Chips, cracks, rust and worn glaze
Porcelain is hard but brittle, and a sink lives in hard water. These are the repairs we see every week, and what is honest to expect from each.
Chips on the rim
The rim takes the hits: a dropped bottle, a curling iron, a ring against the edge. Rim chips are shallow but wide and sit where you see them. We shape a filler to the rim profile, sand it flush and coat over it, so the edge is smooth again.
Chips around the drain
The worst chip to leave open: water sits there, the exposed body soaks it up and a rust or grey stain spreads under the glaze. The drain flange is masked, the chip filled and the bowl recoated. A corroded flange is a plumber’s job we work around.
Cracks in vitreous china — the honest answer
A vitreous china basin (most bathroom sinks) is fired clay. A crack through it is a break in the body, not the glaze, and it moves with hot and cold water. We can fill and coat a hairline crack so it stops showing and staining, but no coating makes a cracked china basin reliably watertight, and we will not promise it. If the crack weeps underneath or crosses the drain, replacement wins, and we will say so from your photos.
Rust rings on cast-iron kitchen sinks
Enameled cast iron rusts wherever the enamel is worn through, and the ring keeps growing. We grind the rust back to sound metal, treat and fill it, then refinish the sink — see kitchen sink refinishing. Kitchen sinks carry a 6-month warranty because of the heavier use.
Crazing and worn glaze
Hairline crazing and the dull patch where hard water has etched the glaze are cosmetic, but they trap dirt and hair dye. Both are sealed under the new coating. Spot repair cannot fix them, which is the usual reason a chip repair becomes a refinish.
A previous bad repair
Touch-up paint and epoxy kits leave a yellowed blob in a different white that lifts at the edges. We level or remove it before our repair goes on and note it in the quote — the one thing that reliably adds time.
Spot repair or full refinish?
Both start with the same filler and sanding. The difference is what goes on top, and how much of the sink it covers.
Spot repair only
One small chip on a sink otherwise in good condition. We fill, sand and touch in the spot with the same coating. It is durable, but on an older sink it reads slightly brighter than the glaze around it, and does nothing for stains or crazing elsewhere. Quoted on inspection from your photos.
Repair + full refinish
Chips, rust, crazing and stains fixed together and the whole sink coated in one white, with a written warranty. We recommend it for anything more than one small chip, and it is what most people picture when they search for porcelain sink repair. Priced as porcelain sink refinishing: $250–$500 for most sinks.
When replacement wins
A through-crack that leaks, a basin broken into pieces, or a failed mounting flange. Refinishing seals a surface; it does not hold a broken sink together. We will tell you from your photos if that is what you have, at no charge. Everything we do restore is on our surfaces we refinish page.
Tub chipped too? See porcelain tub repair, bathtub repair and cracked bathtub repair — sink and tub done on one visit come out in the same white.
How much does porcelain sink repair cost?
Repair is priced with the refinish. Most sinks refinish for $250–$500, chips included. A stand-alone spot repair with no refinish is quoted on inspection from your photos.

A rim chip on a drop-in bowl sits at the low end; a pedestal done inside and out, or a cast-iron kitchen sink with rust at the drain, lands higher. Text us a photo for an exact price, usually the same day.

Frequently asked questions
Yes. Rim, drain and bowl chips are filled, shaped and sanded flush, then the sink is refinished so the repair disappears under one uniform coat. Most sinks are done in a single visit.
A hairline crack in the glaze can be sealed and coated so it stops showing. A crack through a vitreous china basin is a break in the body: we can make it look better, but cannot make it reliably watertight and will not promise to. If it leaks, replacement is the honest answer.
A touch-up kit leaves a dot in a different white that yellows and lifts with hot water, and has to be removed before a proper repair. Our filler is sanded flush and coated over, so there is nothing to see.
Yes. Rust means the enamel is worn through to the iron. We grind it out, treat and fill the spot and refinish the sink, which stops the ring growing. Heavy rust is quoted from your photos.
Repair is included when the sink is refinished, and most sinks refinish for $250–$500. A spot repair alone is quoted on inspection. Photo estimates are free, usually the same day.
No. Chips are repaired and the sink refinished in place, with the faucet, drain and plumbing connected. Pedestal and wall-hung sinks stay on the wall.
About 24 hours. Keep it completely dry while the coating cures, including faucet drips, then use non-abrasive cleaners.
When the sink is refinished, bathroom and vanity sinks carry our written 2-year warranty and kitchen sinks 6 months, against peeling and coating failure under normal use. New chips from impact are not covered.
